Kelly Harchetts on Coaching, Community, and the Power of Volunteering

Manahawkin, NJ - As she enters her 14th season at the helm of the Union College field hockey program in 2025, Kelly Harchetts continues to make an impact far beyond the sidelines. In addition to leading the Garnet on the field, Harchetts also serves as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Union, supporting athletes from many of the college’s 26 varsity programs. Her influence reaches across departments, across the NFHCA membership, across the coaching community, and across generations of student-athletes.
Since taking over as the seventh head coach in program history, Harchetts has helped Union athletes achieve impressive accolades—producing 12 NFHCA All-Region selections and 32 All-Liberty League honorees in her first 13 seasons. But for Harchetts, coaching and leadership extend far beyond stats. It’s about connection, growth, and service – values that also shine through in her volunteerism with the NFHCA.
When asked what motivated her to get involved with the NFHCA, Harchetts credited a colleague who encouraged her to step up.
“A coaching friend was chairing a committee and needed help finding coaches to serve,” she shared. “The NFHCA has given so much to me, as both a player and a coach. When the opportunity was presented to return that time and energy, it was a no brainer.”
Over the past 13 years, Harchetts has volunteered on several committees, bringing her energy and insight to a wide range of NFHCA initiatives. From serving as a member and eventual chair of the Collegiate Senior Team Committee to serving on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and, most recently, the Hall of Fame Committee, her service has connected her with peers and shaped her perspective
“It’s been an incredible opportunity to learn about some of the most successful stories our game has to offer,” she reflected. “The NFHCA is 100-percent here to give recognition to all those deserving, while supporting our own journeys each step of the way. I’ve learned how small a piece I am in the grand puzzle of the field hockey world—but also, how important each piece is.”
Like many in the coaching community, Harchetts credits her own growth to mentors who inspired and challenged her. One name stands out above all: Salisbury Head Coach Dawn Chamberlin.
“Dawn has always challenged me to be better, never settle, and to work hard for everything I earn,” said Harchetts. “She took a chance on me in 2009, and her love and support have never waivered. Her hugs and our candy exchange are more meaningful to me than she’ll ever know.”
Reflecting on the value of the NFHCA, Harchetts is quick to point out the relationships and learning that have shaped her over the years.
“We can be each other’s best resources, and the NFHCA provides endless opportunities to connect us—if we take advantage of them,” she said. “Whether it’s a Campfire group, committee meeting, or convention gathering, I am a better coach and a better person because of what I’ve learned from my colleagues.”
And for those considering getting more involved?
“You will meet some incredible people through volunteering. The time and energy you give will come back to you—but that’s not the reason to do it,” she emphasized. “Do it because there are people working hard to recognize us and our student-athletes. They need our help. More importantly, they deserve our help.”
Through her coaching, mentorship, and volunteerism, Kelly Harchetts exemplifies the NFHCA spirit: dedication to the game, commitment to community, and a deep belief in the power of giving back.
