WHY FIELD HOCKEY
A well established NCAA women’s championship sport with deep roots, a strong student-athlete academic profile, broad recruiting reach, and a growing global presence.
Long before the first NCAA Field Hockey Championship in 1981, the sport was a cornerstone of women’s intercollegiate athletics during the AIAW era and had already been part of college campuses across the U.S. since the early 1900s. Today, more than 6,500 NCAA student-athletes compete in field hockey at nearly 300 institutions nationwide.
Field Hockey Forward builds on that legacy by helping colleges and universities explore field hockey as a strategic opportunity to expand women’s athletics participation, strengthen enrollment, support gender equity goals, and create meaningful student-athlete experiences. USA Field Hockey and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) have united through the Field Hockey Forward initiative to elevate the visibility, awareness, and long-term growth of one of America’s most historic women’s sports.

We’ve had a strong interest level in the sport of field hockey from prospective students for many years, as well as currently enrolled students. It’s an immensely popular sport locally and in the greater Mid-Atlantic region. With the recent addition of our multi-sport turf facility and new competitive opportunities due to our conference merger, we’re very excited to add it to our current list of varsity sport programs.
Rahsaan Carlton, Penn State Harrisburg Director of Athletics
We made a decision as an institution that we needed to recruit students from a more national pool. Field hockey is a prevalent sport at the high schools in the markets we are trying to grow. When a young woman comes to JCU and has a good experience as a student-athlete, it paves the way for other students to see the university as an option in their journey. Adding field hockey was good for female athletes in our department and for our institution at-large and we are thrilled we made this decision.
