NFHCA announces 2023 NFHCA Division III Regional Players of the Year
GENEVA, N.Y. — Seven student-athletes were selected to represent their respective region as the NFHCA Division III Regional Player of the Year. In Region V, two student-athletes are being recognized as co-regional players of the year. Each regional award winner is now in the running for NFHCA Division III National Player of the Year honors.
Region I
Brianne McGrath, Babson College, Gr., Midfielder (Newmarket, Ontario)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region I, First Team
- New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Offensive Player of the Year
- All-NEWMAC First Team
- NEWMAC Tournament MVP
- Finished the season with 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists
- Tied for fifth in program history with 127 career points
Region II
Amy Griffin, Middlebury College, Jr., Midfielder (Wilmette, Illinois)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region II, First Team
- New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Defensive Player of the Year
- All-NESCAC First Team
- Led the NESCAC in points (56), tied for first in goals (23), and fourth in assists (10)
- Tallied a point in 18 of 22 games this fall, highlighted by a hat trick in the NESCAC quarterfinals and the game-winning goal in the NCAA semifinal victory over Babson College
Region III
Maeve Fogarty, University of Rochester, So., Forward (St. Louis, Missouri)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region III, First Team
- Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year
- All-Liberty League First-Team
- Led the Liberty League in points (33), tied for first in goals (13), and third in assists (7)
Region IV
Jenna Flemings, Kean University, 5th year, Goalkeeper (Tabernacle, New Jersey)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region IV, First Team
- Named New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Goalkeeper of the Year
- All-NJAC First Team
- NCAA All-Tournament Team
- Played every minute (1211:20) in cage and tallied 136 saves for the sixth best save percentage (.850) in the country
Region V
Liz Falterer, Johns Hopkins University, Jr., Defender (Fairfield, Connecticut)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region V, First Team
- Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year
- NCAA All-Tournament Team
- Led the team in defensive saves (3); ranked second in points (22), tied for second in goals (9) and tied for fourth in assists (4)
- Anchored a defense that ranked sixth nationally in goals against average (.60) and shutouts (12)
Nicole Shank, Messiah University, 5th year, Defender (Palmyra, Pennsylvania)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region V, First Team
- Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Co-Defensive Player of the Year
- All-MAC Commonwealth First Team
- MAC Commonwealth Tournament MVP
- Led Messiah in points (22) on seven goals and eight assists
- Anchored a defense that allowed only 17 goals during the season while earning nine shutouts
Region VI
Abby Asuncion, Christopher Newport University, Gr., Forward (Sterling, Virginia)
- Named to NFHCA Division III Region VI, First Team
- Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Player of the Year
- All-C2C First-Team
- C2C All-Tournament Team
- Led the Captains in goals (14) and points (33)
- Set program records in career goals (52), points (125), and game-winning goals (14)
The NFHCA Division III Regional Player of the Year announcement is the second in a list of postseason awards from the NFHCA. Last week the 2023 NFHCA Division III All-Region teams were announced. The Division III NFHCA All-American teams will be announced on December 12 and the NFHCA Division III National Player of the Year on December 15.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to champion, strengthen, and celebrate field hockey coaches and the game. The NFHCA strives to cultivate and recognize the professional contributions of its membership and to foster and promote the growth of the sport. The NFHCA is responsible for providing a recognizable presence and voice in regard to legislation affecting the sport as well as interscholastic and intercollegiate programs.
