NORFOLK COUNTY, MA — In six seasons as head field hockey coach at Wellesley College, Callie Lekas has established a consistent presence in the NEWMAC Conference. In each of of her first six seasons, she has guided the program to the conference championship, reinforcing a clear and sustained standard of performance.

Lekas is also the first alumna student-athlete in program history to return to Wellesley as head coach, bringing a full-circle perspective to her leadership. As a former student-athlete for the Blue, she earned three NFHCA First Team All-Region selections, adding meaningful perspective to her current role in recognizing excellence across the sport.

Service That Strengthens the Sport

Lekas extends her impact beyond her own program through active service with the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). She has contributed to the NFHCA through roles on the Collegiate Senior Team Committee, Collegiate Coaches Poll Committee, and newly formed DIII Governance Advisory Council. Together, these groups play a critical role in recognizing excellence and shaping governance across the collegiate field hockey landscape.

Her motivation to serve is grounded in purpose.

“I was inspired to get involved with committee work because what the NFHCA does really makes a difference and has a positive impact on so many field hockey student-athletes,” Lekas said.

Leadership Beyond the Team

For Lekas, committee service is not separate from coaching. It is an extension of it.

“My leadership of my own team is enhanced by my personal leadership through service,” she said. “Part of my role as coach is to be a role model and leader in our sport, and working alongside the NFHCA allows me to highlight that piece.”

This perspective reflects a broader understanding of coaching as both a team responsibility and a contribution to the profession.

Meaningful Moments through Collaboration

One of Lekas’s most impactful experiences came through her involvement with the Division III Senior Team All-Star Game a few years ago. The process of selecting and organizing the event brought the work of the committee into clear focus.

“To see the hours of work the committee put into selecting the teams come to fruition with the student-athletes competing on the field was incredible,” she said.

The opportunity to collaborate with and learn from fellow Division III coaches added further value to the experience.

A Collective Path Forward

Balancing coaching, service, and personal responsibilities requires intention. For Lekas, the investment is worthwhile.

Her advice to coaches considering involvement is direct.

“Stepping into a role that might be out of your comfort zone will amplify your own personal and professional growth, so just say yes and see where it can take you,” she said.  Lekas believes the future of field hockey depends on continued collaboration, mentorship, and shared leadership.

“Things will be in a constant state of change, with new coaches entering the profession and new challenges to navigate,” she said. “We need each other to share ideas, engage in dialogue, and represent the coaching community in a way that continues to grow the game.”

In addition to her collegiate and committee work, Lekas has remained involved in the broader field hockey community, supporting the growth of the game at the youth and club levels. Through her service, Lekas contributes time, perspective, and leadership that support the continued growth of field hockey. Her involvement reflects a broader commitment shared across the NFHCA community.

She remains focused on learning, connecting, and serving alongside coaches who are equally invested in advancing the game.

Serve the Sport. Get Involved with the NFHCA

Inspired by leaders like Lekas, many NFHCA members choose to give back through service to the coaching community. More than 200 coaches currently contribute their time and expertise across the Association’s 13 standing committees, helping shape programs, recognition initiatives, and the future of the sport. Coaches interested in becoming more involved are encouraged to complete the NFHCA Committee Service Application in the NFHCA Member Portal (under ‘Forms’) and take part in strengthening the field hockey community.
