Wright, Van Rootselaar named NFHCA Division I National Players of the Week

GENEVA, N.Y. — Junior defender from No. 2 University of Maryland, Rayne Wright, and graduate student midfielder from No. 2 University of Maryland, Danielle Van Rootselaar, have been named this week’s NFHCA Division I Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week sponsored by ScoreBreak, respectively. The performance of No. 1 University of North Carolina’s senior forward, Erin Matson, merited an honorable mention.

NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week

 

Rayne Wright, No. 2 University of Maryland, Jr., Defender (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)

  • Anchored the Terps defensive efforts in a 2-0 weekend for Maryland
  • Held then-No. 3 University of Iowa and then-No. 2 Northwestern University each to a singular goal
  • Led a Terp defense that surrendered just a combined seven shots and eight penalty corners vs Iowa and Northwestern
  • The Terps are now the only Big Ten school to remain undefeated in conference play
  • Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week

 

Danielle Van Rootselaar, No. 2 University of Maryland, Gr., Midfielder (Bilthoven, The Netherlands)

  • Scored all four goals as No. 2 Maryland went 2-0 on the weekend
  • Scored consecutive overtime game winners to lift the Terps over then-No. 3 Iowa and then-No. 2 Northwestern
  • Converted three penalty corners and one unassisted goal to claim two top-5 road victories
  • The Terps are now the only Big Ten school to remain undefeated in conference play
  • Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

Honorable Mention

 

Erin Matson, No. 1 University of North Carolina, Sr., Forward (Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania)

  • Scored four goals and one assist in the 6-3 victory vs then-No. 14 Liberty University
  • Matson’s nine points on the day brought her to exactly 300 points in her career, six shy of equaling the ACC’s all-time scoring mark
  • Tied her single-game high for goals (4) and marked the fourth time during her UNC career that she’s scored four goals in a single game
  • Leads the ACC in goals (1.44 per game) and points (3.22 per game)
  • Named ACC Offensive Player of the Week

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to stimulate the professional development of coaching leadership within the sport of field hockey.
