NCAA Finalizes Division I Field Hockey Legislative Changes

Jun 24, 2026

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO  — NCAA leaders finalized multiple changes impacting Division I field hockey this week, approving four sport-specific legislative proposals and adopting a new age-based eligibility model that will shape the future of college athletics.

The actions came at the conclusion of the NCAA Division I June Cabinet meetings and represent the culmination of months of collaboration among NFHCA membership, NCAA committees, and conference administrators. The legislation provides greater flexibility in several key areas while creating additional consistency for institutions and student-athletes.

Four Legislative Proposals Adopted

Beginning with the 2026-27 academic year, the following Division I legislative changes are now official.

Permanent Field Hockey Preseason Practice Start Date

Institutions may begin preseason practice 21 calendar days prior to their first regular-season contest, instead of 16 calendar days prior. The legislation permanently establishes the preseason start date earlier, eliminating the need for annual blanket waivers that have been utilized in recent years, shifting from a 16-day period to a 21-day period.  The emphasis on enhanced student-athlete acclimatization and injury prevention was a critical factor for the change. (Proposal 2026-23)

In-Season Foreign Competition

Division I programs will no longer be limited to participating in one in-season foreign competition every four years. The new legislation removes that restriction, providing institutions with greater flexibility when scheduling permissible international competition opportunities. (Proposal 2026-24)

Spring Travel Flexibility

The NCAA eliminated the requirement restricting teams to ground transportation only for spring season competition within 400 miles. Institutions now have additional flexibility when planning travel during the spring non-championship season while continuing to follow institutional travel policies. (Policy 2026-29)

Updated Transfer Portal Windows

Division I undergraduate student-athletes may initiate the notification of transfer process during one of two designated windows:

  • A 30-consecutive-day period beginning the Tuesday following the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, replacing the previous model that opened seven days after NCAA Tournament selections and before the NCAA Championship
  • May 1–15

The revised fall transfer calendar aligns more closely with the conclusion of the competitive season while maintaining the existing spring transfer period. By shifting the fall window to after NCAA Championship weekend, any potential transfer distractions are eliminated during postseason play. (Proposal 2026-38)

NCAA Approves New Age-Based Eligibility Model

The Division I Cabinet also formally adopted the NCAA’s new ‘Five-for-Five’ age-based eligibility model, representing one of the most significant changes to Division I eligibility legislation in decades.

Beginning with students who initially enroll full-time in Fall 2027, student-athletes who enroll full-time in college by the academic year following their 19th birthday will have five seasons of competition within a five-year eligibility window. The new model is designed to simplify NCAA eligibility legislation by replacing the current seasons-of-competition framework while reducing the need for eligibility waivers and redshirts. The Cabinet defined the exceptions that could delay or pause an individual’s period of eligibility under the age-based rules, which include pregnancy, active-duty military service and official religious missions.

Current student-athletes and those enrolling prior to Fall 2027 will continue under transition provisions established by the NCAA. The adoption of the Five-for-Five model marks the culmination of an extensive legislative process that included feedback from coaches, administrators, student-athletes, and stakeholders across the country. In May, the NFHCA connected with Division I coaches about the proposal’s potential impact on recruiting, roster management, athlete development, and competitive balance. Their perspectives offered valuable context leading up to this decision and remain a helpful resource for understanding the legislation’s broader implications. 2026-27 NCAA Rules Modifications Released

Alongside the legislative actions, the NCAA released the 2026-27 Field Hockey Rules Modifications earlier this month, approved by the NCAA Rules Oversight Panel. The updated FIH Rules (March 2026 edition) also serve as an important reference.

The NFHCA extends its appreciation to the many coaches who provided thoughtful feedback throughout the NCAA legislative process. Their engagement and expertise continue to play an important role in shaping the future of collegiate field hockey.
