Hendry, Matson named Play Safe/NFHCA Division I National Players of the Week

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Senior goalkeeper, Amanda Hendry, and junior forward, Erin Matson, both from the University of North Carolina, have been named this week’s Play Safe/NFHCA Division I Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively. Their performances this past weekend helped propel the Tar Heels to their fourth-consecutive and 23rd-overall Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

Amanda Hendry, University of North Carolina, Sr., Goalkeeper (Wilton, Connecticut)

Hendry played every minute for the Tar Heels over the tournament’s three-game slate. In the quarterfinal round against Boston College, Hendry amassed nine saves and secured the shutout for UNC. In the semifinals against Syracuse University, Hendry made eight saves including two clutch saves in the overtime period to help UNC secure the win and a place in the final.

In the championship game between UNC and the University of Louisville, Hendry earned four saves and directed a corner unit that successfully defended seven of the game’s eight UofL penalty corners.

Hendry finished the fall season leading the conference in goals against average (1.28), saves (51), and shutouts per game (.182).

Hendry was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team.

Play Safe/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week

 

Erin Matson, University of North Carolina, Jr., Forward (Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania)

Over the course of UNC’s three-game ACC tournament, Matson accumulated nine points on four goals and one assist.

Matson scored once in both the quarterfinal round, against Boston College, and in the semifinal round, versus Syracuse University. In the final game, against the University of Louisville, Matson notched UNC’s first goal of the game to close the scoring gap to 2-1. Then, in the final two minutes of the game, Matson scored for a second time to add to UNC’s lead, making the final score 4-2.

Matson finished the fall season leading the ACC in all offensive categories.

Matson was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team for the third year in a row and was named the tournament’s MVP. This is Matson’s third Play Safe/NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week honor this year.
