Develop attacking and defending decision-making as play progresses from an even-numbered 2v2 into a 4v2 numerical advantage, forcing players to adapt quickly in transition.
Objective
This drill develops attacking and defending decision-making through a progression from a 2v2 into a 4v2. Attackers learn to create width and capitalize on the numerical advantage, while defenders work to delay play, protect the middle, communicate with the goalkeeper, and transition quickly to attack after winning possession.
Skill Emphasis
- Attacking width
- Attacking in even-numbered and numbers-up situations
- Defending in even-numbered and numbers-down situations
- Transition to attack
- Counterattacking
- Defensive communication
- Goalkeeper communication
- Decision-making
Drill
- Set up two goals in the 25-yard area with a goalkeeper in each goal.
- Two attackers begin a 2v2 toward Goalkeeper 1.
- If the defenders win possession, they immediately counterattack toward Goalkeeper 2.
- Once the first ball is complete, two new attackers enter quickly.
- They join the original pair to create a 4v2 toward Goalkeeper 1.
- If the defenders regain possession, they again counterattack toward Goalkeeper 2.
- Repeat the sequence from the opposite side.
Recommended
- Create width and use the numerical advantage on attack.
- Defenders delay play, protect the middle, and communicate with the goalkeeper.
- Look to play forward immediately after winning possession.
- Prepare the second ball quickly to maintain a fast transition.
- Award points for goals, successful counterattacks, or goalkeeper clears.
- Use a mini-goal as the second cage if only one goalkeeper is available.
- Limit touches during the 4v2 to increase speed of play.
