Magnotta, Cookman named NFHCA Division I National Players of the Week

MANAHAWKIN, NJ  — Sophomore goalkeeper from No. 7 University of Iowa, Mia Magnotta, and sophomore forward from University of New Hampshire, Tasmin Cookman, have been named this week’s NFHCA Division I Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Graduate goalkeeper from No. 9 University of Louisville, Merlin van der Vegt, and senior forward from No. 11 Saint Joseph’s University, Lily Santi, received honorable mention nods for Division I Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, as well.

NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week

 

Mia Magnotta, No. 7 Iowa University, So., Goalkeeper (Forty-Fort, Pennsylvania)

  • Magnotta played all 60 minutes in goal in Iowa’s shutout victory over No. 12 Wake Forest.
  • Played all 62 minutes in goal in Iowa’s 3-2 OT victory over No. 1 North Carolina, making a career-high six saves in that contest.
  • Iowa’s win snapped UNC’s 22-game win streak.

NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week

 

Tasmin Cookman, University of New Hampshire, So., Forward (Woking, England)

  • Registered seven points in a perfect 2-0 week for the Wildcats.
  • Posted two goals, including the game-winner in overtime against Quinnipiac.
  • Registered one goal and one assist in 4-0 shutout of Michigan State.

NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention

 

Merlijn van der Vegt, No. 9 University of Louisville, Gr., Goalkeeper (Utrecht, The Netherlands)

  • ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
  • Allowed one goal and totaled 11 saves in two games to help the ninth-ranked Cardinals notch a pair of wins in their season-opening weekend, highlighted by a shutout victory at No. 2 Northwestern.
  • Collected a pair of saves in a 3-1 win over Northeastern.
  • Followed it up with nine saves Sunday as the Cardinals prevailed, 1-0, in a road triumph over the second-ranked Wildcats.

NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention

 

Lily Santi, Saint Joseph’s University, Sr., Forward (Oceanport, NJ)

  • Scored in each of the Hawks’ opening weekend victories.
  • Her goal late in the first quarter on Friday put the Hawks on the board en route to a 2-0 win over #15 UConn.
  • The reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year tallied again on Sunday as the Hawks topped UMass Lowell, 4-0.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States.
