Manahawkin, NJ - Meredith Spencer-Blaetz has made a significant mark on the Stevens Institute of Technology’s field hockey program since being named head coach in April 2016. As she enters her eighth season, her leadership has transformed the Ducks into a formidable force in collegiate field hockey. With an impressive overall record of 82-52 and tied for the program’s all-time coaching wins, Spencer-Blaetz is a testament to dedication and excellence in the sport.

The 2023 season was particularly noteworthy for Spencer-Blaetz and the Ducks. They not only clinched the conference championship but also earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament, marking another milestone in the program’s history. Under her guidance, the team has made six postseason appearances—two in the Empire 8 Conference and four in the MAC Freedom—while achieving five consecutive winning seasons. The Ducks celebrated a remarkable 14-game winning streak in 2023, showcasing their resilience and skill.

For her outstanding season, Spencer-Blaetz was honored as the MAC Coach of the Year in 2023, a recognition that underscores her impact on her players and the program.

Beyond her coaching duties, Spencer-Blaetz is actively involved with the NFHCA. As Co-Chair of the Annual Convention Committee and a former member of the Senior Team Committee, her service contributes to the mission of the NFHCA.

Spencer-Blaetz has also gained valuable insights from her time as an assistant to former NFHCA president Andy Whitcomb, who has been a significant mentor in her career. “Her lessons stay with me, and I find myself frequently using her idioms with my own team,” she shares, illustrating the profound influence mentorship can have in coaching.

For Spencer-Blaetz, the NFHCA serves as a vital support system for coaches at all levels. “From job boards to the community connections we create at Convention, I feel like I have a network of people that I can connect with,” she states. This network has been invaluable in her development as a coach and in building relationships within the field hockey community.

Her enthusiasm for the NFHCA is palpable, and she encourages other coaches to get involved. “The NFHCA is your one-stop shop for all things field hockey in the US! The education, support, recognition, and camaraderie are just the surface of how the NFHCA has impacted my coaching career,” she asserts.

As she reflects on the future of the NFHCA, Spencer-Blaetz expresses hope for continued growth and increased support for more schools. “I know that the NFHCA is capable of adapting to meet the needs of coaches, and I hope to see even more programs to support our community,” she says.

When reminiscing about her most memorable field hockey moment, Spencer-Blaetz highlights her time as an assistant coach at her alma mater, where they won the NEWMAC championship in a thrilling double-overtime match that coincided with her birthday. “The energy was incredible, and I still stay connected with many of those players,” she recalls fondly.

Her experiences as a coach have instilled a deep understanding of the value of relationships. “The moments that make me the most proud are seeing my team as strong women and good people,” she reflects. This perspective not only shapes her coaching philosophy but also reinforces her commitment to fostering meaningful connections within her team.

As Meredith Spencer-Blaetz continues to lead the Ducks at Stevens Institute of Technology, her impact on the program and the field hockey community at large is undeniable. Her journey exemplifies the power of mentorship, community, and a commitment to excellence in both coaching and personal growth.
