Mendez, Boon NFHCA DI Field Hockey Players of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Dani Mendez, a senior forward/midfielder from the University of North Carolina, and Juliana Boon, a first-year goalkeeper from Northwestern University, have been named this week’s NFHCA Division I Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Dionne van Aalsum, a junior midfielder from the University of Iowa and Nilou Lempers, a junior goalkeeper from the University of Virginia, also received honorable mention nods for Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.
NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week
Juliana Boon, Northwestern University, First-Year, Goalkeeper (Houston, TX)
- Earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for Sept 8
- Stopped nine shots in two shutout wins over then No. 5 Duke and then No. 8 Boston College in the ACC/B1G Challenge
- Holds a shutout streak of 240 minutes
- Anchors a defense that has not conceded a goal this season
NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week
Dani Mendez, University of North Carolina, Senior, Forward/Midfielder (Reisterstown, MD)
- Earned the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for Sept 9
- Notched five points on the week with a goal and three assists in two Tarheel wins
- Delivered the assist on the Tar Heels’ game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over then No. 10 Princeton
NFHCA Division I Honorable Mention
Defensive: Nilou Lempers, University of Virginia, Junior, Goalkeeper (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
- Recorded 7 saves in two shutout wins over a pair of ranked opponents
- Earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors for Sept 9
Offensive: Dionne van Aalsum, University of Iowa, Junior, Midfielder (Castricum, Netherlands)
- Paced the Hawkeyes attack with eight goals in two wins
- Tallied back-to-back four-goal games over the weekend
