Matson, Nijziel named NFHCA Division I National Players of the Week

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Senior defender from No. 1 University of Iowa, Anthe Nijziel, and senior forward from No. 5 University of North Carolina, Erin Matson, have been named this week’s NFHCA Division I Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.

NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week

 

Anthe Nijziel, No. 1 University of Iowa, Sr., Defender (Eindhoven, The Netherlands)

  • Registered four points in Iowa’s two victories against No. 8 Penn State University last weekend
  • Scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win on Friday
  • Contributed two assists in Iowa’s 4-0 win on Sunday to complete the weekend sweep
  • Anchored an Iowa defense that posted consecutive shutouts and limited the Nittany Lions to just four shots on goal across two games
  • The Hawkeyes have posted a program-record eight-consecutive shutouts
  • Named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week

NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week

 

Erin Matson, No. 5 University of North Carolina, Sr., Forward (Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania)

  • Totaled eight offensive points in wins over a pair of ranked opponents
  • Assisted on the second goal and then scored the fifth in the Tar Heels’ 6-1 win over No. 10 Boston College
  • Scored twice — including the game winner — and recorded one assist against No. 16 University of Connecticut on Sunday
  • Left the weekend with 241 career points (95 goals, 51 assists), putting her second all-time in Atlantic Coast Conference history
  • Named ACC Offensive Player of the Week
  • This is Matson’s second NFHCA Offensive Player of the Week honor this season

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to stimulate the professional development of coaching leadership within the sport of field hockey.
