Basque, Stark named NFHCA Division III National Players of the Week
MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Sophomore goalkeeper from No. 18 Bryn Mawr College, Charlene Basque, and senior forward from Lasell University, Lily Stark, have been named this week’s NFHCA Division III Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper from Randolph-Macon College, Valentina Ambrogi-Torres, and junior forward from No. 15 Bates College, Maria Femia, received honorable mention nods for Division III Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, as well.
NFHCA Division III Defensive Player of the Week
Charlene Basque, Bryn Mawr College, So., Goalkeeper (West Newbury, Massachusetts)
- Basque totaled 12 saves and a .909 save percentage in a 2-0 week for the Owls.
- She opened the week with a two-save shutout against Alvernia before recording 10 saves in a 2-1 double overtime win vs. Mary Washington.
- Basque leads the Centennial in goals against average (.312) and save percentage (.923) so far this season and boasts a 3-0 record between the pipes.
NFHCA Division III Offensive Player of the Week
Lily Stark, Lasell University, Sr., Forward (Saco, Maine)
- Stark led Lasell to an undefeated 3-0 week, defeating non-conference opponent Framingham State as well as the GNAC’s Elms and New England College.
- She scored two hat tricks this week. First on Monday (Sept. 4), Stark found the back of the net three times to register six points.
- Then on Thursday (Sept. 7), she netted another hat trick and assisted on one of Lasell’s 12 goals in a 12-0 victory over Elms to register seven points, giving her a total of 13 points for the week. Of her six goals, two of them were game-winners.
NFHCA Division III Defensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention
Valentina Ambrogi-Torres, Randolph-Macon College, Fr., Goalkeeper (Richmond, Virginia)
- Ambrogi-Torres helped the Yellow Jackets make team history in their only contest of the week, as she made 10 saves in a full 60-minute shift in Randolph-Macon’s 2-1 triumph at Catholic, marking the first win for RMC field hockey over the Cardinals since 2004 and their first victory in Washington, D.C., since 1984.
- The lone goal Ambrogi-Torres conceded came with 54 second left in the first half.
- She then made six of her 10 stops in the second half as Randolph-Macon scored twice to overtake the Cardinals.
- Ambrogi-Torres leads the ODAC with a 0.785 goals against average and a 0.833 save percentage.
NFHCA Division III Offensive Player of the Week Honorable Mention
Maria Femia, No. 15 Bates College, Jr., Forward (Canton, Massachusetts)
- Femia led the charge in a 3-0 week for Bates. The junior opened the season with two goals and an assist in a win over the University of Southern Maine.
- She followed that up with another tally in a shutout victory over Thomas and capped off the week with a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over No. 16 Bowdoin, marking the Bobcats’ first win in Brunswick since 1982.
- Her five goals on the season come on six shot attempts and is tied for first in the NESCAC in goals scored.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to champion, strengthen, and celebrate field hockey coaches and the game.
