Submitted by Carly Zinn, Dickinson College

We get a lot of questions about how coaches develop drills and Carly Zinn’s drill submission does an amazing job of illustrating the drill-making process. She recognized a consistent breakdown when doing film analysis, identified the cause of the problem and the specific areas for improvement, then developed a drill that directly addresses those vulnerabilities.

The Target/Vision Player Drill is designed to allow student-athletes to play freely with even numbers, while emphasizing the need for prevision and spatial awareness from the ball carrier and other attackers, addressing the problem that Carly’s midfielders were facing and giving them a solution or, at the very least, the tools for finding a solution.

Feel empowered to modify the drill based on your team’s needs by changing the numbers and the dimensions — or better yet, take Carly’s process and apply it to your coaching practices to develop custom drills for your team!
