As we return to play during the pandemic, many coaches are looking for creative ways to incorporate physical distancing into their practices. This Physically Distanced 3v1 provides an opportunity for game-like play while managing physical-distancing requirements.

Given the attack’s numerical advantage in this drill, they should — with good vision, quick decision-making, and efficient leading — be able to keep the playing area spread out and the ball away from the defender.

And we’re not forgetting about the defenders — 3v1 situations are not uncommon in field hockey, this drill provides an opportunity for defenders to work on their body positioning, patience, and intercepting lines…made possible with clear communications from their goalkeeper.

Coaches are encouraged to morph this drill to fit their needs and their team’s playing level. Have fun…at a distance!
