Cornelius, Whitmer named NFHCA August Scholastic Player of the Month

GENEVA, N.Y. — Paige Cornelius, a junior midfielder from New Albany High School in New Albany, Ohio, and Erin Whitmer, a senior goalkeeper from Highlands Latin School in Louisville, Kentucky, have been named the August Scholastic Players of the Month.

Cornelius started the season strong having amassed 17 points on seven goals and three assists across three games played during the month of August. The midfielder registered four of the goals in just one game. In August, Cornelius buried the game-winning goal in an overtime victory vs Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame.

Whitmer registered five shutouts in eight games played during the month of August. The goalkeeper currently holds a .882 save percentage. Whitmer led her team to win the 50th Anniversary of the Sacred Heart Apple Tournament Varsity B Bracket. During the tournament, Whitmer helped her team win 5 back-to-back games, four of which were shutouts. Only one goal was scored on Whitmer throughout the tournament. Whitmer’s performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team and was awarded Apple Tournament MVP.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to stimulate the professional development of coaching leadership within the sport of field hockey. The NFHCA strives to cultivate and recognize the professional contributions of its membership and to foster and promote the growth of the sport. The NFHCA is responsible for providing a recognizable presence and voice in regard to legislation affecting the sport as well as interscholastic and intercollegiate programs.
