Green Whistle Project
The Green Whistle Project – Empowering the Next Generation of Field Hockey Umpires
The Green Whistle Project, led by the NFHCA Sport Development Committee and inspired by similar efforts in other sports, is designed to support and encourage new field hockey umpires. By introducing a simple yet impactful identifier—a green-lanyard whistle—this initiative ensures that new umpires are easily recognized, fostering a safer and more respectful environment for them.
Recognizing the challenges that new umpires often face, the Green Whistle Project provides structured training, mentorship, and development opportunities. Through accessible education and hands-on experience, the program creates a welcoming pathway into officiating while strengthening the relationships between umpires, coaches, and athletes.
Graduates of the program receive a whistle with a green lanyard, signifying their participation and commitment to growing as an umpire.
