GILBERT, Ariz. — Erin Matson, sophomore forward from the University of North Carolina, has been selected as the 2019 First Point USA/NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year after a standout season culminating in a 2019 NCAA Division I National Championship.
The Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and First Point USA/NFHCA South Region Player of the Year led the nation in points and goals per game. She finished the 2019 season with 33 goals, 15 assists, and 81 points — helping the Tar Heels to their second-consecutive undefeated season and ranking her second all-time in season goals and season points at UNC.
Last week, Matson was named a Longstreth/NFHCA First Team All-American for the second-consecutive year, and was recognized as the NCAA Division I National Championship Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in November.
Matson — who missed three games this season to compete with the U.S. Women’s National Team — led her team in all three offensive categories for the second year in a row. So far in her career, Matson has been a part of a UNC team that has won two NCAA Division I National Championships, two ACC regular-season championships, and two ACC tournament championships.
