NFHCA Coaches Corner: Breaking Through Performance with Mental Fitness Strategies

As we enter the midway point of the field hockey season, the mental fitness of your team becomes more important than ever. This Virtual Coaches Corner will help you leverage sports psychology and implement mental fitness strategies into your practices to help you finish the season strong.
Join Dr. Silby and Dr. McHenry for an overview of sports psychology and strategies to incorporate into your training. Throughout the presentation, they will answer presubmitted questions and will end the session with a live Q&A.
Dr. Caroline Silby
Head of Sports Psychology, US Figure Skating
Caroline Silby holds a doctoral and master’s degree of Sports Psychology from the University of Virginia. She is a nationally recognized expert on the development of elite athletes, author of Games Girls Play: Understanding and Guiding Young Female Athletes, and contributing author to four other books on female athletic performance.
She served for twelve years as adjunct faculty at American University and has worked on an individual basis with three Olympic Gold Medalists, over 20 Olympians, two Paralympian Gold Medalists and pro athletes, as well as hundreds of National Team members and Division I student- athletes, teams, and their coaches. She has worked individually with athletes from a wide variety of sports and is currently the head of sport psychology for the US Figure Skating and Team USA and most recently served as sport psych consultant for US Figure Skating at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang and will return for the 2022 Olympic Games. She has received recognition of appreciation for service to Olympic Teams in 1996, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Dr. Lauren McHenry
Sport Psychology Team Member, US Figure Skating
Dr. Lauren McHenry is a certified mental performance consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. She holds a doctoral degree in sport psychology and motor behavior. Lauren translated her research into practice as the lead creator, facilitator, and evaluator of Thriving Through Being, a professional development program implemented with NCAA women’s basketball coaches and support staff focused on building intra- and inter-personal skills. Lauren is a consultant to athletes and coaches across sports nationwide and is subcontracted to support the US Figure Skating sport psychology team.
