GILBERT, Ariz. — The University of North Carolina has been voted into first place on the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for the tenth-consecutive week. The Tar Heels have topped every 2019 poll and were an unanimous choice for first place in every poll since week four when current No. 8, Duke University, received one first-place vote.
UNC finished last week with an Atlantic Coast Conference Championship trophy in their hands and will go forward as the number one seed in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament. The Tar Heels will host first- and second-round games at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill and will face the winner of the opening-round contest between Miami University and No. 15 Stanford University.
The Top Five
After securing a Big East Conference Championship last weekend, the University of Connecticut Huskies moved into second place on the poll. They will also host first- and second-round games — the Huskies will take on the winner of the opening-round match between No. 23 American University and No. 25 Fairfield University.
Rounding out the top five are No. 3 University of Maryland, No. 4 University of Virginia, and No. 5 University of Louisville — all three received at-large bids to the postseason tournament and are listed as the top seeds in their first-round contests. In addition to UNC and UCONN, Louisville and UVA will also host the first and second rounds of the tournament.
The NCAA postseason will kick off on Wednesday with opening round games in Stanford, California and Fairfield, Connecticut. First-round contests will take place on Friday with games scheduled for noon and 2:30 p.m. EST.
