A recap of 2019 Winter Escape and changes to NFHCA recruiting events

College coaches on the sidelines at 2019 Winter Escape

GILBERT, Ariz. — The 2019 Winter Escape event concluded last week after three days of beautiful weather at the Boombah Sports Complex in Sanford, Florida. Due to the popularity of the event's Uncommitted Showcase, organizers doubled the number of participant slots from the previous year. The 2019 Uncommitted Showcase featured 130 athletes in nine games — the sidelines were crowded with college coaches who were watching athletes from the 2019 and 2020 classes compete. The Uncommitted Showcase was covered by MAX Field Hockey, the go-to source for youth, high school and college field hockey information.

This year, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) also evolved the presentation of its recruiting seminars. The recruiting seminars took on a "pop-up" format where a lecture tent was erected in the middle of the complex to house four-separate recruiting seminars that were open to athletes and parents. Heather Lewis, the host of the recruiting seminars, saw more than 300 visitors over the course of two days.

During the four years of Winter Escape's existance, it has grown in size and popularity, but has retained its mission to be a catalyst in helping each athlete find their hockey home. NFHCA showcases feature special events like the Uncommitted Showcase, Shot Stoppers Goalkeeping sessions, Scoring sessions and house teams where athletes can register to participate as individuals. The NFHCA events are also highlighted by robust college coach attendance — the 2019 Winter Escape had 215 pre-registered colleges, many of which sent more than one coach to the event. "The NFHCA is committed to helping everyone find their hockey home," said Marybeth Freeman, NFHCA President. "The special events at Winter Escape allow athletes to display their skills with an abundance of coaches on the sideline." The NFHCA is excited to continue the growth of its recruiting events and continue to help athletes find their home at the next level.

The NFHCA would like to take this time to thank Corrigan Sports Enterprises for their partnership in the operation and planning of the NFHCA recruiting events. The NFHCA will not be sponsoring Spring Fling in 2019 as it plans the future of the NFHCA recruiting events. Please bookmark the NFHCA website, as updates regarding future NFHCA recruiting events will be posted there throughout the spring.
