Duke Moves to No. 1 in Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll

CHANDLER, Ariz. - With three straight shutouts to start the season, Duke rose one spot to take the No. 1 ranking in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Coaches Poll announced on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils blanked Maryland and Northwestern over the weekend to keep their sheet clean for the season. Duke is followed in the rankings by two more undefeated squads in No. 2 Connecticut and No. 3 Penn State. Both the Huskies and Nittany Lions have three wins over ranked opponents through the first two weeks of the season. Rounding out the top five are No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 Syracuse.

Delaware comes in at No. 6, followed by No. 7 Michigan and three teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference: No. 8 Boston College, No. 9 Louisville and No. 10 Virginia.

Coming in at No. 11 is Maryland, with Princeton at No. 12, Stanford at No. 13, Northwestern at No. 14 and James Madison at No. 15. The rest of the top 20 includes Boston University at No. 16, Iowa at No. 17, Harvard at No. 18, Wake Forest at No. 19 and American at No. 20. Filling out the final five spots in the poll are No. 21 Albany, No. 22 Rutgers, No. 23 Ohio State, No. 24 Maine and No. 25 Old Dominion.

There are 12 games between ranked opponents this week, with six on Friday and another six on Sunday. Friday’s slate includes three ACC matchups with No. 1 Duke at No. 10 Virginia, No. 4 North Carolina at No. 19 Wake Forest and No. 5 Syracuse at No. 8 Boston College. The day’s action also features No. 9 Louisville against No. 20 American, No. 12 Princeton hosting No. 22 Rutgers and No. 16 Boston University at No. 21 Albany. Sunday’s slate includes four of the top five teams on the road at ranked opponents with No. 1 Duke at No. 15 James Madison, No. 2 Connecticut at No. 18 Harvard, No. 3 Penn State at No. 12 Princeton and No. 5 Syracuse at No. 21 Albany. The action also features No. 9 Louisville at No. 11 Maryland and No. 23 Ohio State at No. 19 Wake Forest.
