Connecticut Maintains Top Spot in Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll

Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll - Sept. 19

GILBERT, Ariz. - Connecticut is the last undefeated team left in the country, and the Huskies are also a resounding selection as the No. 1-ranked squad in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Coaches Poll announced on Tuesday.

The Huskies maintained their grip on the top spot with 1,165 points and 43 out of a possible 47 first-place votes. Duke inched up two places to No. 2 in the poll, followed by No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Virginia and No. 5 Delaware. Connecticut will visit the defending national champion Blue Hens on Sunday.

Coming in at No. 6 was Syracuse, with the rest of the top 10 including No. 7 North Carolina, No. 8 Boston College, No. 9 Michigan and No. 10 Maryland. Wake Forest made a five-spot jump to No. 11, with Stanford at No. 12, James Madison at No. 13, Northwestern at No. 14 and Louisville at No. 15. Two Ivy League teams came next with Harvard at No. 16 and Princeton at No. 17, and the rest of the poll featured No. 18 William & Mary, No. 19 Iowa, No. 20 Albany, No. 21 Saint Joseph's, No. 22 American, No. 23 Rutgers, No. 24 Boston University and No. 25 Monmouth, who was a new entrant this week.

The UConn/Delaware matchup on Sunday is one of 15 games between ranked opponents on the schedule this week. Six others occur that day with No. 9 Michigan at No. 3 Penn State, No. 7 North Carolina at No. 20 Albany, No. 14 Northwestern at No. 10 Maryland, No. 13 James Madison at No. 15 Louisville, No. 17 Princeton at No. 24 Boston University and No. 19 Iowa at No. 23 Rutgers. The ranked slate begins on Tuesday with No. 17 Princeton at No. 10 Maryland and No. 15 Louisville at No. 14 Northwestern, while Friday's schedule features No. 8 Boston College at No. 4 Virginia, No. 14 Northwestern at No. 3 Penn State, No. 20 Albany at No. 5 Delaware, No. 19 Iowa at No. 10 Maryland and No. 11 Wake Forest at No. 15 Louisville while No. 7 North Carolina visits No. 6 Syracuse on Saturday.
